On June 10, Kanazawa University Strategic Project for Development of Doctoral Students and Research Promotion (HaKaSe+) and Career Support Office, Educational and Student Affairs Department held a career guidance "Designing a Career for Doctoral Degree and Beyond," as the first program of 2025 KU Doctoral Career Session, for Bachelor's and Master's students.

On the day, Tomonori Fukasawa, president of Emerging Technologies Corporation, which provides career support services for doctoral students, visited the university as a lecturer. In addition to Bachelor's and Master's students, Doctoral students participated, and a total of about 100 people, including those attending the in-person venue and those attending the online broadcast, listened intently to a talk on the employment and career development of doctoral students.

In his guidance, Fukasawa explained various possible career paths for PhD holders, reasons why PhD holders can be active in business, and the difference between job hunting for bachelor's and master's students and that for doctoral students, using specific examples in an easy-to-understand manner. In addition, he explained that PhD holders are expected to connect research and society, and that in order to do so, they need to understand the strengths of their own research and what they want to do, and to have the ability to verbalize this to others.

Next, Takamune Izui of the company spoke about his own experiences while he was a doctoral student. He advised that Doctoral students have a lot of things to do and research is fun, but that is why you should think carefully when deciding on a doctoral program and your future career path, and if you are aiming for a doctoral degree, you should talk carefully with your supervisor.

During the Q&A session, Fukasawa answered various questions, including a comparison between a person who has completed a master's degree and has been working for 4 years and a person who has completed a doctoral degree and has been working for 1 year, key points when a PhD holder starts a business, and job hunting when a doctoral degree cannot be obtained in the standard period of study.
