On June 8, a public lecture "Let's Enjoy English Communication!" was held at Kanazawa University and 7 participants, ranging in age from high school students to people in their 60s, attended.
This course aims to develop confidence in communicating in English through a series of 5 lectures by different instructors, in which participants think together and practice aloud.
In the first session, Professor Takeshi Koguma of the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies, Institute of Liberal Arts and Science gave a lecture entitled "From a Linguistic Perspective - Let's Compare Spatial and Temporal Expressions in English and Japanese." He explained the structural polysemy of words, and showed with concrete examples how different interpretations are caused by the structure of words and sentences, and the ambiguity caused by differences in viewpoints. Then, the prepositions such as "at," "in," "on," and "etc.," related to "time" and "space" in English were taken up, and in addition to the commonalities in their basic meanings and usages, the development of derived meanings was introduced.
Students commented that they found it interesting to study English from a different perspective and that they wanted to study English more and more after being taught the depth of the language.
